FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
London, September 16th – Eliminating dampness and mould in your home is crucial, as they can produce allergens, irritants, mould spores, and other toxins that increase the risk of health problems. Directgov reports that in England there are currently 2 million people living in homes with significant damp or mould issues, accounting for 3-4% of residences. Mould exposure can trigger severe respiratory issues for those allergic, such as asthma attacks, chronic sinus infections, and other allergic reactions.
Recent research by Allevia, an airborne allergy relief medication, has revealed that almost 1 in 5 Brits report being allergic to mould, making it the UK’s fourth most common airborne allergy. Interestingly, this number rises among Gen X, with 57% of this age group actively cleaning more often and trying to control moisture levels in their homes to prevent allergy flare-ups, in addition to taking medication. These findings underscore the widespread nature of mould allergies and the importance of maintaining a dry, mould-free living environment for optimal respiratory health.
Cities across the UK are experiencing mould allergies, underscoring the need for greater awareness and proactive measures to combat mould growth.
These are the top 3 UK cities allergic to mould
When it comes to the top three cities in the UK affected by mould allergies, Sunderland, also known as the City of Sunderland, located within the county of Tyne and Wear in Northeast England, takes the top spot. Home to 274,171 residents, 43% of them are allergic to mould.
The study found that 71% of residents experience nasal symptoms, 57% suffer from ocular symptoms, 14% report itching, and 43% have experienced coughing.
BBC News reports residents living in social housing on Wearside say their health is deteriorating due to black mould and damp conditions that blight their homes. Complaints about these issues remain unresolved, leading to poor living conditions.
Following closely in joint place are St Albans and Warrington, both at 33%, indicating residents in both cities are experiencing the same issue.
Bradford leads UK cities in mould prevention with top home cleaning efforts
The study revealed that Bradford, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire in Northern England situated in the foothills of the Pennines and home to 536,986 residents, is leading the way in cleaning their homes the most among all UK cities with 90% of residents keeping their homes extremely clean. This increased effort is primarily aimed at preventing mould, with 10% of Bradford’s residents suffering from mould-related allergies.
These diligent cleaning habits are likely a response to the higher humidity levels and damp conditions prevalent in the region, which can exacerbate mould growth. Bradford’s proactive approach serves as a model for other cities facing similar issues, showcasing the impact of regular home maintenance on reducing allergen exposure and improving overall quality of life.
