Popular artisan market held at pub for more than 5 years will sadly be no more

On Saturday, Independent Street marked its last Great Sankey Artisan Market at The Woodlands.

Since launching more than half a decade ago, the event has proudly showcased hundreds of small businesses, community groups, charities, dance troops, Christmas choirs and more.

However, it will sadly be no more.

Lisa Cowley, the owner of Independent Street which runs artisan markets across Warrington, took to Facebook to share the sad news but to also reflect and thank those involved.

“We are deeply grateful to Andrea, Dan, and everyone at Great Sankey Parish Council for their unwavering support in building a market that became a much-loved part of the community,” Lisa said.

“To everyone who supported us, shopped local, and helped make Great Sankey a treasured memory, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

“To our lovely loyal traders, we thank you, you were the ‘great’ in Sankey.”

Independent Street will still continue to run events across Warrington, including in Birchwood, the town centre and at Bents Home and Garden.

But it also has some ‘new and exciting things’ on the horizon.

The Woodlands has also issued a statement thanking Lisa and the team for the last five years.

“The team at The Woodlands would like to thank Lisa Cowley and her team for the past five years of amazing markets,” the statement reads.

“We first met Lisa and her team when they were not well established and had all just started out, now that they are more than well established and host their markets at several locations in Warrington, Cheshire and beyond.

“We would like to congratulate them on all their hard work and dedication to get to where they are today.”

The Woodlands says it will be offering the opportunity to another team of local small businesses who need the same help that Lisa once did.
